Kano State Approves N1.1 Billion for Free School Uniforms

The Kano State Government has approved N1.1 billion for the procurement of free school uniforms for all Primary One pupils across the state, a strategic initiative aimed at boosting school enrollment and reducing the number of out-of-school children.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, spokesperson for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday in Kano.

According to the statement, the provision of free uniforms is designed to enhance school enrollment, improve retention rates, and ensure equal educational opportunities for all children in Kano.

Governor Yusuf emphasized the transformative power of the initiative, stating, “Education is a right, not a privilege. This program will alleviate the financial burden on parents and make it easier for every child to access quality education.”

The initiative targets Primary One pupils in public schools, aiming to attract out-of-school children back to classrooms and support families facing economic challenges.

Dawakin-Tofa noted that the move complements other education reforms under the Yusuf administration, aligning with the state’s broader agenda to revitalize the education sector and address Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis, which is particularly acute in the northern region.

The N1.1 billion allocation will cover the production and distribution of uniforms, ensuring that every eligible pupil receives them free of charge.

The free uniform program is part of Governor Yusuf’s broader education reforms, which include infrastructure upgrades, teacher training, and efforts to improve access to quality education.
