“I Don’t See Myself As Queen Of Afrobeats” — Tiwa Savage

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about why she doesn’t fully embrace the nickname “Queen of Afrobeats,” insisting that the title should not belong to just one artist.

Speaking in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Ebro, posted on X on Thursday, Savage acknowledged the appreciation behind the label but explained her discomfort with it.

“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” she said.

She elaborated on her perspective, adding, “Personally, I don’t like that tag, it’s uncomfortable because I feel like if I start accepting it, I need to be humble and secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t [accept it]. But I appreciate it. It didn’t come up with it. I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artists in Nigeria to breakthrough. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted.”

By sharing her thoughts, Tiwa Savage highlighted her humility and respect for other female musicians who have also contributed significantly to the Afrobeats movement.
