Aiyedatiwa Vows To Transform Akure Into A Modern State Capital

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Akure into a modern and befitting state capital, comparable to any across Nigeria.

Speaking on Thursday during the official flag-off ceremony for the construction of 32 units of four-bedroom terraced residential buildings for members of the State Executive Council, Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the development of Akure remains a top priority under his administration.

The groundbreaking event, held at the Government House Grounds in Alagbaka, marks a significant milestone in the state’s urban renewal drive. According to the governor, the ongoing infrastructural upgrades around the Alagbaka area are only the beginning of a broader master plan to elevate Akure into a world-class city.

“We are committed to building a capital city that reflects the dignity and aspirations of our people,” Aiyedatiwa said. “This residential estate for cabinet members is a step in that direction and part of our broader agenda to strengthen infrastructure in the state.”

The 32-unit estate will consist of 28 homes arranged in five clusters of modern terrace blocks and four exclusive stand-alone houses. The estate will also feature a gatehouse and a dedicated utility block for maintenance and security.

Governor Aiyedatiwa explained that the housing project addresses a longstanding shortage of official residences for top government officials. He noted that previously, only a few cabinet members had access to secure government accommodation.

“This project is designed not only to meet the housing needs of our executives but also to demonstrate our commitment to the welfare of those entrusted with the business of governance,” he said.

He also assured that similar housing initiatives would soon be extended to the legislature and judiciary, urging other arms of government to be patient as plans unfold.

Beyond this, the governor reiterated his promise to implement an affordable housing scheme targeted at civil servants across the state, describing housing as a key component of his administration’s OUR EASE development agenda.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, hailed the project as a bold step toward reducing the state’s housing deficit. He urged the contractor to ensure timely and high-quality delivery.

Also speaking at the event, Engr. Baba Kalli, Chief Technical Officer of Cosgrove Investment Ltd.—the project contractor—assured that the estate would be built to the highest standards. He praised the initiative as a testament to visionary leadership and effective governance.

The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, who was present at the event, commended the governor for prioritizing the development of Akure. He called on the administration to sustain the momentum in infrastructure and city planning.
