Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the last election, met in Abuja, on Thursday.

The meeting held amid talks that opposition parties are considering to field either of them in the battle to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

In August, senior officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed ongoing efforts to persuade the former president to return as the party’s flag bearer.

The development followed renewed internal consultations and public appeals from influential members who argued that Jonathan’s unique blend of national experience, electoral appeal and statesmanship gives the PDP its best chance of reclaiming the presidency.

Jonathan, who served as president from 2010 to 2015, remains one of the most recognisable political figures in the country.

On his part, Obi, a two-term governor of Anambra State, gained momentum after the 2023 election, where he not only placed third, but dislodged President Tinubu in his Lagos stronghold.

‘The Obidient Movement, comprising young persons who are his supporters, also went far and wide, in pushing for his emergence.

Details of the meeting between Obi and Jonathan have not been disclosed but  in a post on his official X handle, he said their discussions focused on national issues and the state of the country.

He wrote: “Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan @GEJonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation. -PO.”
