Ex-NNPCL CEO Kyari Arrested As EFCC Investigates Refinery Allocations

Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to Daily Trust, Kyari arrived at the anti-graft agency’s headquarters at around 2:30 pm.

Sources within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed that the former NNPCL boss is expected to answer questions regarding funds allocated for Nigeria’s refineries.

“He is currently in our office and will soon be taken to the interrogation room to respond to our inquiries,” a source familiar with the matter said.

The development follows a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that froze all bank accounts linked to Kyari at the request of the EFCC.

The move is part of the commission’s ongoing effort to scrutinize the management of funds within the country’s oil sector.

Kyari had previously been placed on the agency’s watchlist prior to his appearance, signaling the seriousness of the investigation.

The EFCC has reportedly been reviewing transactions and payments tied to refinery operations, with a focus on ensuring accountability for public resources.

“This investigation is part of our commitment to transparency in the oil and gas sector,” the source added.
