Over 720,000 Die By Suicide Annually — NOA Calls For Compassionate Dialogue In Nigeria

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) on Wednesday intensified efforts to create awareness on suicidal behaviours among Nigerians.

Speaking in Dutse to mark the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), the Jigawa State Director of NOA, Mr. Ahmad Tijjani, emphasized the urgent need to break the stigma surrounding suicide and encourage open conversations on mental health.

World Suicide Prevention Day, observed globally on September 10 every year, aims to raise awareness about suicide, foster worldwide commitment, and highlight the importance of addressing mental health challenges while reducing discrimination.

Mr. Tijani explained that the agency joined the rest of the world to reiterate the message that suicide is preventable. He added that creating safe spaces for dialogue and spreading hope are key steps toward saving lives.

“Every year, more than 720,000 lives are lost to suicide across the world, with each tragic incident leaving behind families and communities devastated,” he said.

According to him, Nigerians must work collectively to change the narrative, dispel harmful myths, and combat stigma. “Suicide is preventable and together we can change the narrative, break harmful myths and stigma. Therefore, let us encourage open and compassionate dialogue. We should check in on family, friends, and neighbours; sometimes a simple question can save a life,” Mr. Tijjani stated.

The NOA director urged Nigerians to cultivate empathy by listening with patience and without judgment. He further encouraged individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts to seek professional help from doctors, counsellors, or hotlines, and to take advantage of available support systems.

“Use words that heal. Your kindness and care can bring hope. World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembrance but about hope. Let us stand together against stigma and show that every life matters,” he added.
