WAEC Urges Schools to Upgrade ICT Centres for Computer-Based Exams

Mr. Adeniran-Amusan Akim, WAEC Zonal Coordinator, made the announcement during a sensitization programme on Thursday in Port Harcourt, organized by Teadro Systems Ltd in collaboration with the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Bank of Industry (BOI), Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and Canon.

Akim revealed that the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) will be fully implemented starting with the 2026 diet. 

He emphasized the need for schools to prepare for the shift, noting that a nationwide sensitization campaign, which began in Abuja, will reach all states.

Expressing optimism, Akim highlighted Rivers State’s strong participation in the campaign, positioning it as a potential leader in adopting the computer-based format. 

For schools unable to meet WAEC’s standards, designated examination centres have been established.

Akim urged schools aiming to conduct exams on their premises to acquire necessary infrastructure, including 250 functional laptops with 10% backups, a robust server supporting 250 systems, a Local Area Network (LAN), adequate air conditioning, lighting, uninterrupted power supply (UPS), a 40 kVA backup generator, CCTV cameras, and a holding room.

Mr. Lucky Njoagwuani, Head of Examination at WAEC, noted that the council successfully conducted computer-based exams for private candidates over the past two years. 

“This year’s private candidate exam is fully computer-based with no paper option, and next year’s school candidate exam will follow suit,” he said.

Njoagwuani highlighted benefits like increased accessibility and reduced costs for paper and logistics. 

Meanwhile, Mr. Sunday Jaja, NAPPS Rivers Chairman, stressed the importance of schools staying updated with technological trends. He encouraged leveraging BOI’s RAPID intervention loan and federal MSME funds to finance the transition.

The event concluded with a raffle draw by Teadro Systems, awarding an HP computer set, Canon printer, Lenovo tablet, keyboard, and mouse to promote technological advancements in schools.
