Daniel Levy steps down as Tottenham chairman after 24 years

Tottenham Hotspur’s long-serving executive chairman, Daniel Levy, has stepped down after nearly a quarter of a century at the helm.

Levy, appointed in March 2001, leaves his role at 63 after guiding Spurs to Europa League glory in May, ending the club’s 17-year wait for silverware.

His tenure makes him the Premier League’s longest-serving chairman, during which he reportedly earned more than £50m.

Despite overseeing Tottenham’s transformation into a global football brand, Levy was often the target of fan protests, particularly last season.

“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees,” Levy said in a statement. “We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level. More than that, we have built a community.

“I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years. I wish to thank all the fans who have supported me over the years. It hasn’t always been an easy journey, but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”

During his stewardship, Levy oversaw the £1bn Tottenham Hotspur Stadium project, moving the club from White Hart Lane to its new home in 2019. Spurs also reached the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino in 2019, losing 2-0 to Liverpool.

Levy, known for his tough negotiating style, leaves behind a club widely recognised for financial stability. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has described Tottenham as the “most profitable club in Premier League history,” citing the revenue generated by their stadium, a controlled wage structure, and cautious transfer spending.

This summer, Tottenham invested around £181m on new signings, including attacking midfielders Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus, reflecting the club’s ambition to compete for top honours in the coming years.
