The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has claimed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is incapable of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The party stressed that even if Jonathan decides to contest in the 2027 general elections, he does not pose a threat to President Tinubu’s position.
The party made its position clear in a statement issued on Friday, by its spokesman, Seye Oladejo, amid growing speculation about Jonathan’s possible return to the presidential race.
Oladejo noted that Jonathan’s political relevance had waned and was insufficient to challenge President Tinubu, who he said embodies the type of leadership Nigeria needs at this time.
“While we acknowledge the former president’s role in the peaceful democratic transition of 2015, an act that rightly earned him praise at home and abroad, we must state, in clear terms, that Nigeria has since moved beyond the politics of sentiment, nostalgia, and symbolism,” Oladejo stated.
He argued that Jonathan’s time in office from 2010 to 2015 left behind deep challenges.
“The challenges of today and the future require bold, capable, and forward-thinking leadership, not a return to the comfort of a past that was far from perfect. Let it be clear: good luck alone is not a governance strategy,” he said.
According to the APC, Jonathan’s administration was plagued with insecurity, corruption, and economic stagnation.
Oladejo also pointed out that a comeback bid by Jonathan would trigger “constitutional and political complications” since he had already completed more than one term in office.
“Moreover, the former president’s political relevance has been complicated by his recent engagements across party lines.
“His flirtation with the APC and absence from PDP’s strategic rebuilding efforts raise questions about his loyalty, clarity of vision, and political intentions,” he added.
The Lagos APC insisted it remains focused on consolidating Tinubu’s reforms and presenting credible candidates that reflect the aspirations of Nigeria’s youthful population.
