President Bola Tinubu has committed N16.7 billion for the immediate reconstruction of the collapsed Mokwa Bridge in Niger State, following its destruction during recent flooding that caused significant loss of life and property.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, disclosed this in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi, on Saturday after discussions with David Umahi, the Minister of Works.

In a statement issued the same day by Rabiu Ibrahim, media aide to the information minister, Idris emphasized that this decision reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to promptly addressing the country’s infrastructural challenges.
The Minister also highlighted that President Tinubu is attentive to the concerns of Nigerians and expressed confidence that this development would bring great relief to the people of Niger State.
The statement read, “We extend our gratitude to Mr. President and the Honourable Minister of Works. This was a joint effort, and after presenting the matter to the President, he generously gave his approval. This funding of N16.7 billion will go towards rebuilding the 10-span bridge.”
Idris further commended Minister Umahi for swiftly deploying technical teams to assess the damage shortly after the incident.
He described the President’s approval as “welcome news” for both the government and the residents of Niger State.
Idris is currently leading a federal team on a three-day tour of the South-East, focusing on project evaluations and engagement with local communities.
In his remarks, Umahi praised President Tinubu as a compassionate and attentive leader, committed to resolving the challenges faced by citizens.
“The President granted immediate approval for the bridge reconstruction following the request from the Honourable Minister, showing his support and responsiveness,” Umahi stated.

The Minister of Works also revealed that the recent approvals cover multiple infrastructure projects across all geopolitical zones.
These include the rebuilding of the five-span bridge washed away in Wukari, Taraba; repairs to Lokoja Bridge; permanent fixes on the Afikpo road in Ebonyi, connecting Abia and Imo states; the Keffi flyover bridge; Jebba Bridge in Kwara; seven bridges across Edo; and a bridge in Kebbi.
It would be recalled that the Mokwa Bridge collapsed in May amid severe flooding that submerged over 50 homes in the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities of Mokwa Local Government Area, Niger State, tragically claiming the lives of approximately 150 residents.
