The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) on Saturday left no one in doubt of its dominance of Anambra politics when it stamped its authority in the by-elections that held In Anambra South Senatorial district, and Onitsha North 1 state constituency.

In the Anambra South Senatorial by-election, APGA candidate Emma Nwachukwu secured a commanding victory with 90,408 votes, ahead of the APC candidate who polled 19,847 votes. ADC followed with 2,889 votes, while LP and PDP trailed behind with 205 and 68 votes, respectively.

Similarly, in the Onitsha North I State Constituency by-election, Barrister Ifeoma Mimi Azikiwe of APGA garnered 7,774 votes, defeating ADC’s Mrs. Justice Azuka, who received 1,909 votes. APC’s Mr. Ezennia Chuka Ojekwe and YPP’s Ms. Njideka Ndiwe scored 1,371 and 655 votes, respectively.

Saturday’s by-election was seen as litmus test for the November 8 governorship election with the participating political parties hoping to use the results as a bait on voters.

APGA has been in control of Anambra State since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

Save for a period of about three years when Dr. Chris Ngige of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was sworn in as governor but later removed for falsified election results , APGA had remained the ruling political party, winning the governorship election in in recent times majority of seats in the House of Assembly.

But the party hardly win more national assembly seats than its rivals, and that is why Nwachukwu’s victory is being celebrated by the party.
