BBC Rejects Resignation Of Hausa Editor Amid Harassment Allegations

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has turned down the resignation of its Hausa Service Editor, Aliyu Abdullahi Tanko, after placing him on a three-month suspension over allegations of workplace harassment raised by some former employees.

Tanko was reportedly suspended on Wednesday and immediately tendered his resignation the following day. However, the organisation declined his request to step down.

The broadcaster has recently faced criticism after a viral video surfaced featuring former staff member Halima Umar Salah, who appeared on a programme aired by Arewa24. In the video, she alleged harassment within the BBC Hausa Service, though she did not mention specific names.

A source who spoke to online platform SolaceBase revealed that Tanko’s resignation was rejected because it failed to follow official procedure.

“The resignation was rejected on the ground that it did not follow due process, that is, as a senior staff, he needs to give two months’ notice or pay two months’ salary in lieu of notice, or vice versa if the organisation is terminating his service,” the source explained.

The BBC has also set up an internal investigation into multiple petitions filed against Tanko by both current and former employees of the Hausa Service.

According to SolaceBase, the probe was sanctioned by Jonathan Munro, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of BBC News and Director of BBC News Global.
