Talks ongoing for Obi, Jonathan to join PDP presidential race — Senator Moro

Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has hinted that former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s Peter Obi could rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 26, Moro revealed that talks were underway with both leaders as part of the PDP’s efforts to regain power.

Moro said …

“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate.”

When queried on the likelihood of Jonathan returning to the PDP, Moro replied, “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”

Goodluck Jonathan, who assumed office in 2011 following the death of President Musa Yar’Adua and governed until 2015, became Nigeria’s first incumbent president to lose an election when he was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari. Since then, he has largely stayed away from active politics within the PDP, though calls for his return have remained strong among party loyalists.

Peter Obi, the former Anambra State governor, was the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 before moving to the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 elections. His campaign attracted massive youth support, ultimately placing him third behind Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, Obi has been working with prominent opposition leaders under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition and has signaled his interest in another presidential run. However, the political platform through which he plans to pursue this ambition is still uncertain.
