The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that six passengers were injured on Tuesday morning after a Kaduna-bound train derailed at KM 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations.
According to a statement by Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, the derailment occurred at about 11:09 a.m. While no fatalities were recorded, six passengers sustained varying degrees of injury.
The Bureau said a “go-team” had been deployed to the site to gather evidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and commence an investigation into the causes of the accident.
“The Bureau sympathises with those injured and extends its support to all passengers affected. The investigation will focus on identifying the direct and underlying factors that led to the derailment, with the aim of issuing safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence,” the statement read.

NSIB Director-General, Alex Badeh, also commiserated with the victims, stressing the Bureau’s commitment to ensuring safer rail transport through transparent and independent investigations.
The incident, which occurred shortly after the train left Abuja, threw passengers into panic. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with many scrambling out of cabins in fear after the train suddenly went off the tracks.
In a separate statement, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the derailment and said emergency rescue operations were immediately activated.
“Medical personnel and nearby hospitals have been mobilised. Security operatives are already on the ground, and efforts are ongoing to move all passengers back to Abuja safely,” NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa stated.
The NSIB said updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
