Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is set to begin a one-month leave on Friday, August 29, 2025, and has formally handed over authority to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal.
The governor’s decision was contained in a letter transmitted to the Oyo State House of Assembly and read by Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin during Tuesday’s plenary.
The move is in line with Section 190(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which requires governors to notify their state assemblies before embarking on leave.
In his letter, Makinde stated that Lawal will function as Acting Governor throughout the vacation period, assuring that he will resume office on Monday, September 29, 2025.
“I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as Acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, 29th September 2025,” the letter read in part.
The House of Assembly acknowledged the communication and pledged full support for a smooth transition of duties in the governor’s absence, emphasizing its commitment to constitutional order and continuity of governance.
With this development, Barrister Bayo Lawal is expected to assume full responsibilities of the governor’s office from August 29 until Makinde’s return.
The Assembly also announced it will reconvene for plenary on September 16, 2025.
