NAF jet pilots hailed for heroism after surviving crash

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Sunday commended two of its Alpha Jet pilots for their exceptional courage and professionalism after they safely ejected from their aircraft during an in-flight emergency at the NAF Base in Kainji, Niger State.

The incident occurred on 6 December 2025 during a post-inspection functional check flight.

According to the NAF, the aircraft developed a critical fault shortly after take-off, forcing the pilots to initiate emergency procedures.

“Despite the sudden malfunction, the aircrew maintained composure and successfully manoeuvred the jet away from residential areas, preventing potential casualties and property damage.

“Both pilots ejected safely and were immediately evacuated for routine medical evaluation”, NAF said.

Sunday Aneke, Chief of the Air Staff, praised the pilots for their discipline, sound judgement and bravery, noting that their actions reflected the highest standards of military aviation.

He described their conduct as a clear demonstration of the values that underpin the service.

The Air Chief ordered the immediate constitution of a Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the incident and recommend preventive measures.

The NAF also commended the swift and coordinated response of its Search and Rescue teams, Fire and Crash Response units and medical personnel, who promptly secured the crash site and ensured the wellbeing of the aircrew.

Their professionalism, the service noted, exemplified the teamwork and dedication required to sustain safe and effective air operations.

The incident, the Air Force said, underscores the inherent risks associated with military aviation, where increased flying activity, complex missions and high readiness levels place enormous demands on personnel and equipment.

It also highlights the daily sacrifices of NAF personnel who operate in challenging environments to keep the nation safe.

Reaffirming its commitment to safety and operational excellence, the Nigerian Air Force assured the public that it maintains rigorous aviation safety protocols and will continue to prioritise the protection of its personnel and civilians in all operations.
