96 persons have been arrested for violating environmental sanitation laws across the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Nasarawa State.

The Chief Prosecutor on sanitation offences, Abubakar Mohammed, disclosed this on Saturday after the monthly sanitation exercise in Lafia.

Mohammed said the offenders were apprehended for engaging in private business activities during the sanitation period, an act that contravenes Section 9 (2) of the State Environmental Sanitation Law.

He added that the violators were prosecuted by mobile courts across the LGAs to serve as a deterrent to others.

He noted that the enforcement aims to ensure strict compliance with sanitation regulations and promote a cleaner environment in the state.

During the exercise, the Secretary of the Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority, Christopher Abari, announced that the government had concluded plans to revitalize two waste recycling plants located in Lafia and Karu LGAs.

Abari said the plants—situated in Angwan Rere, Lafia, and Auta Balaifi, Karu—have remained underutilized, but the state government is set to restore them to full operation. He explained that efforts are ongoing to equip the facilities with modern machinery to enhance efficient waste processing.

He said the revitalization project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to improve waste management, reduce pollution, and promote public health.

The authority, he added, has distributed waste bins in strategic locations across the 13 LGAs and urged residents to use designated refuse sites to prevent disease outbreaks.

“Our staff have continued the regular evacuation of waste at dumping sites, and we urge the public to always bring out their waste to the designated points to prevent the spread of diseases.

“If the environment is kept clean, it will guard against possible disease outbreaks and ensure healthier living for the people,” Abari said.

Abari expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance during the November sanitation exercise, commending security agencies, traditional rulers, and the media for their support.
