92-year-old Paul Biya Declared Winner Of Presidential Election For Eight Term

Cameroon’s long-serving leader, Paul Biya, has been re-elected for his eighth term in office.

The country’s Constitutional Council on Monday officially declared Biya the winner of the presidential election, securing 53.66% of the vote.

At 92 years old, Biya extends his position as the world’s oldest sitting president, continuing a rule that began in 1982.

His victory reaffirms his firm hold on power in the Central African nation more than four decades after he first assumed office.

The President of the Constitutional Council Clement Atangana, in a televised announcement said the current Head of State is the one who secured victory in the 12 October 2025 presidential election.

“The candidate who garnered majority votes is Biya Paul,” Atangana announced on Monday in French.

Earlier, the opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary had urged his supporters to “reject any result that will not announce me as the winner.”

The announcement by the Constitutional Council came after weeks of vote-counting.

State television broadcast the results live from Yaoundé, with the Council confirming that Biya had achieved the majority required to retain the presidency.

With this win, President Biya will serve another seven-year term, extending his leadership into his sixth decade in power.

The council praised what it termed “the peaceful conduct of the polls” and urged national unity as the country moves forward under Biya’s continued leadership.

Biya ascended to presidency following the resignation of Cameroon’s first president Ahmadou Ahidjo, who had been in power since independence in 1960.
