The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano state Command has confirmed that no fewer than 23 passengers died and 48 others injured following a road traffic crash at Muhammad Buhari Interchange Flyover, Hotoro, Kano.

The Public Relations Officer, FRSC RS1.2 Kano Sector Command, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

He said the fatal road traffic crash (RTC) occurred on February 13, 2025, at approximately 2150 hours on the Kano-Maiduguri Road.

He also said upon receiving the distress call, the FRSC Kano rescue team, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, promptly responded to the scene to carry out a rescue operation and to restore normal traffic flow.

Labaran, however, provided details of the incident as Preliminary Crash Report as follows: Vehicle involved is a trailer (DAF Model) carrying goods and passengers; cause of RTC was dangerous driving due to over-speeding which resulted in the loss of control under the bridge; the total number of people involved was 71; total number of people injured was 48, and the total fatalities was 23.

According to him, the injured victims were immediately evacuated to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, for urgent medical attention.

Reacting to the incident, the Sector Commander, FRSC Kano Sector Command, CC UM Matazu, dispatched an investigation team to conduct a thorough inquiry into the crash.

He also extended his deep condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.

Furthermore, the Sector commander strongly warned drivers and the general public against overloading trailers with goods, animals, and passengers, emphasising that “such dangerous practices significantly increase the risk of fatal crashes.”

Blueprint reports that the obstruction caused by the accident had since been cleared and the free flow of traffic had been restored.

“The FRSC remains committed to ensuring safety on our roads and urges all motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of lives.”
