2027: PDP No Longer Viable Opposition – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) “is dead, awaiting its obituary.”

Naija News reports that the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the remark on Saturday, October 18, while unveiling the ADC Secretariat in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

He said the ADC is now the only credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The question is no longer whether Kwarans want the APC; that question has been answered. They don’t. The question now is whether we can convince them that ADC is the only alternative, and that’s exactly what we’ll do in the coming elections,” he said.

Decrying rising insecurity across Kwara communities, the former Sports Minister lamented that the menace had crippled farming and disrupted rural life.

“Our people can no longer farm safely. The government must do more to restore peace and ensure that the lives of citizens are protected,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, former Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, said the unveiling of the ADC Secretariat marked the beginning of a new political journey for the state.

“This is the beginning of a new direction in our political experience. The ADC is poised to entrench a party that reflects the true aspirations of Kwarans,” Ahmed declared.

Naija News reports that there has been a wave of defection in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the party has accused governors who recently dumped the party of “greed, avarice, and selfishness,” insisting that Nigerians, not political leaders, will ultimately decide their fate in the 2027 general elections.

The opposition party maintained that it is not governors who sustain a political party but the people, stressing that those abandoning the platform that produced them would eventually regret their actions.

Since the 2023 general election, four sitting governors, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa, have defected from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party has also suffered the loss of its 2023 presidential candidate, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, alongside several key allies.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, dismissed the defections as products of greed.

Abdullahi said, “To the best of my knowledge and that of most Nigerians, you cannot find a compelling reason for a governor, especially one on a second term like in Bayelsa, to abandon the party that produced him.

“You can’t find any justifiable reason other than covetousness, greed, and avarice.”

He added that despite internal challenges, the PDP remains a credible opposition party.
