Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju announced on Friday that he would prefer to vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections rather than support Peter Obi if the opposition coalition selects the former Anambra State Governor as its presidential candidate.
The statement, made during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, intensifies an already heated feud between Adeyanju and Obi, which has recently escalated to threats of legal action.
“God forbid that I support APC. If the opposition presents Peter Obi, I will vote for Tinubu,” Adeyanju stated emphatically, dismissing accusations that his criticisms of Obi amount to covert support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He went further, accusing Obi of fostering a toxic political environment through his supporters, known as “Obidients,” whom he described as a “mob that terrorises people online and cannot tolerate criticism.”
Adeyanju argued that such behavior undermines democracy, adding, “We cannot have a man who leads a mob that calls people all sorts of names. Anybody who cannot support their candidate is seen as an enemy of Nigeria or has been paid to do so. That is not democracy.”
The activist also challenged Obi’s credentials as a democrat, questioning the sacrifices he has made for Nigeria’s political landscape.
“What sacrifices has he made for democracy? Many of us have put our lives on the line at great personal cost. We must sanitise our polity. We cannot have a country where people who terrorise others online dictate the tone of political discourse,” Adeyanju remarked.
Reflecting on his own voting history, he noted that he has consistently backed candidates he deems credible, including Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 and Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and 2015.Adeyanju’s comments come amid a brewing legal dispute.
Obi’s legal team recently issued a notice threatening to sue the activist over alleged defamatory statements made on social media and in interviews, including claims that Obi attempted to bribe him during the 2023 campaigns—a charge Adeyanju denied receiving, stating he avoided partisan support at the time.
“He (Peter Obi) was persistent in reaching out to me in 2023 and I was avoiding him; I didn’t want to support anybody because I’m not partisan,” Adeyanju clarified during the interview.
He dismissed the legal threat, expressing eagerness to defend his position in court if the case proceeds.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been floated as a potential platform for an opposition coalition aimed at challenging Tinubu in 2027, but Adeyanju’s remarks highlight deep divisions within the anti-APC front.
His history of criticizing Obi dates back years, with past statements suggesting Obi secretly supported Tinubu in 2023 and predicting the Labour Party candidate’s inability to win even with extreme measures.
