Reigning African Player of the Year and Atalanta winger, Ademola Lookman, will miss Nigeria’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Benin Republic on Tuesday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Lookman, one of Nigeria’s most influential players, received his second yellow card in consecutive matches during the Super Eagles’ hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho in Polokwane, South Africa, on Friday.
The forward had earlier been booked in the 1-1 draw against South Africa on September 9 in Bloemfontein, and his latest caution triggers an automatic suspension.
The Super Eagles boosted their qualification hopes with the win against Lesotho, thanks to goals from William Troost-Ekong and Akor Adams.
Troost-Ekong opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 55th minute after a Lesotho handball, before substitute Adams doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 80th minute with a composed finish. Lesotho’s Kalake pulled one back in the 83rd minute, but Nigeria held on to claim the vital three points.
Despite the victory, Nigeria remain third in Group C, trailing leaders Benin Republic and South Africa, after Benin’s surprise away win over Rwanda. With only one round of matches left, Nigeria’s qualification fate is no longer entirely in their hands.
