Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong has hailed Nigeria’s 4–0 win over Benin Republic as a product of belief and resilience.
The victory on Match Day 10 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers secured Nigeria’s place in the African playoffs.
Troost-Ekong expressed pride and gratitude during the post-match news conference, applauding the team’s effort and determination.
The 32-year-old also requested a round of applause for head coach Eric Chelle and forward Victor Osimhen, who starred in the win.
“I’m proud to be part of this team, part of this family,” he said. “The boys are playing just like they do for their clubs. We need to keep supporting them.”
He acknowledged the struggles the team had faced in recent months, calling the qualification a hard-earned result.
“It’s easy to celebrate now, but it’s been a tough journey,” he said. “Many said it was impossible, but we kept believing.”
Troost-Ekong urged fans to appreciate the players as individuals, not just athletes.
“We need to love the players for who they are and their efforts. We know when to work and when to relax,” he said.
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in the squad’s chances at the playoffs scheduled for March 2026 in Morocco.
“We have an exceptional group and a big job ahead in Morocco,” he said.
The Harlem-born defender thanked fans and stakeholders for their support and unity.
“Getting here wasn’t easy,” he said. “We’ll take it one game at a time, and I believe we’re going to make it.”
Nigeria missed out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The team’s emphatic win signals a strong intent to return to the global stage in 2026. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
