Sweden’s Armand “Mondo” Duplantis set a new pole vault world record of 6.30 metres on Monday to win his third straight world championship title in Tokyo.

The 25-year-old had already secured gold before attempting the record height, one centimetre above his previous best of 6.29m set in Budapest last month. After two near misses, he cleared the bar on his third try, sending the National Stadium crowd into celebration.

“I am so happy, I cannot explain it,” Duplantis said. “I felt the only way to leave Japan was to set the world record.”

Greek vaulter Emmanouil Karalis took silver with 6.00m, while Australia’s Kurtis Marschall equalled his personal best of 5.95m to claim bronze.

The jump marked Duplantis’ 14th world record and his fourth of the season, reinforcing his dominance in the event.
