“2014 Chibok Girls’ Abduction Still Haunts Me Till This Day”


Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the 2014 Chibok girls abduction as a scar that will remain with him for life.

Reflecting on the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in Borno State, Jonathan said the tragic event left an indelible mark on his government and continues to haunt him.

The former President made the remarks on Friday, during the public presentation of SCARS: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum, a memoir by former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor.

Jonathan commended the former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), stating, “He is a soldier who stood for truth and never played politics with security” .

Speaking on the title of the book, Jonathan said, “One of the major scars on my government is the Chibok Girls.

“As Bishop Kukah said, no plastic or cosmetic surgeon can remove it. It is a scar I will die with” .

He further stated, “Every time I recall the events of that day, I feel the pain of the parents and the nation. It is a wound that will never fully heal” 

Jonathan added, “We must continue to remember the Chibok girls and all victims of terrorism. Their suffering should guide our policies and our prayers”

The 2014 abduction sparked global outrage and led to the BringBackOurGirls campaign, drawing international attention to the Boko Haram insurgency in northeastern Nigeria.
