Two policemen and a personnel of the agro rangers’ unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were injured in renewed clashes between farmers and herders in Yobe State.
The victims reportedly sustained machete wounds on their heads, arms, and legs while attempting to prevent suspected herders from destroying farmlands.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the attack occurred on October 19 in Kojoli village, Gulani Local Government Area.
He explained that a distress call was received indicating that herders had allegedly invaded rice farms in the area, prompting police personnel on special duty in Gulani to mobilise to the scene.
“On arrival, the herders reportedly ambushed the officers and opened fire using AK-47 rifles, bows, and arrows before fleeing,” Abdulkarim said.
He disclosed that during the confrontation, Sgt. Abdullahi Aminu and Cpl. Aliyu Suleiman were overpowered, disarmed, and attacked.
According to him, while one service rifle was recovered, the rifle assigned to Sgt. Aminu was carted away by the fleeing suspects.
