The management of Okitipupa Local Government Area in Ondo State has confirmed the arrest of two suspects linked to last weekend’s attack on Fuji music icon, Abass Akande, popularly known as Obesere.
The incident occurred during a burial ceremony at the Government Field in Okitipupa, where Obesere and his band were billed to perform. Hoodlums reportedly assaulted the musician and his crew, leaving one of his band members stabbed while attempting to fend off the attackers.
In a statement issued by his Media Manager, Ayonla Obesere Althentic, the artiste narrated the ordeal, revealing that the attack happened shortly after his performance as the team prepared to leave the venue.
According to the statement, a group of touts surrounded the entourage, targeting the manager who was holding the money bag. Their attempt to leave the venue peacefully failed as the hoodlums demanded the bag, leading to a violent struggle.
The manager said he was beaten, suffered a dislocated shoulder, and was struck with a knife while trying to enter their car. The attackers eventually overpowered him and fled with the money bag. Obesere was also manhandled despite offering money to calm the assailants.
The team said the matter had been reported to the Okitipupa Police Division, calling on authorities to arrest and prosecute all those involved and prevent similar attacks at public events.
They also expressed appreciation for those who rendered assistance at the scene, as well as the prompt help from security and medical personnel.
Meanwhile, Okitipupa Local Government Chairman, Andrew Ogunsakin, described the attack as “unfortunate and unacceptable.” His Press Secretary, Tosin Ayejusunle, confirmed the arrest of two suspects connected to the incident.
Ayejusunle added that the chairman had reached out to Obesere’s camp and plans to meet with the artiste and his management team to ensure a thorough resolution and prevent future occurrences.
