14 Of 171 Associations Advance To Next Stage Of Becoming Political Parties


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday, cleared 14 political associations to proceed to the next stage in their bids to be registered as full-fledged political parties.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, made the announcement in a statement.

The statement was released on Thursday evening, confirming the clearance of the 14 political associations to advance in the registration process.

Among the associations cleared are the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), National Democratic Party (NDP), and Advanced Nigeria Congress (ANC).

Olumekun said, “The Commission held its regular meeting today, Thursday 11th September 2025.

“In addition to reviewing our preparations for forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections and the end-of-tenure Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

He added, “The meeting also considered the report of its Committee on the Review of Letters of Intent from associations seeking registration as political parties.”

He explained that INEC received a total of 171 applications for party registration.

After a thorough assessment of each request against constitutional provisions, the Electoral Act 2022, and the Commission’s regulations, 14 associations met the requirements to advance, while 157 did not.

“The Commission shall officially communicate the decision arising from today’s meeting to all the associations in the next 24 hours,” Olumekun added.

The cleared associations’ interim chairmen and secretaries are scheduled for a briefing on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 11:00 am at INEC Headquarters in Abuja.

During this session, INEC will verify claims submitted by the associations, both online and physically, to ensure full compliance with legal requirements before making a final determination.

Olumekun emphasized, “Party registration is a continuous process under the law.

“The Commission remains open to the consideration of applications that meet the criteria as provided by law.”
